Boris Smile - Still delivering the goods. The end is hard to see. I can only think of one combination: The slower Fleetwood Mac songs, pre-hit, post-blues, and exclusively written by Bob Welch. Cut that with your idea of Boris (which is probably Pink, longtime fan or not). That’s the extent of my help here. A simplification? Absolutely. The least ”Boris” of all proper Boris albums. Certainly not “weird” or “fucked-up” in the genuine sense, but substantially bent for the next title in this particular discography.

Wildildlife Six - This record reminds me of something that I can’t pin down. When that changes, I’ll let you know - I’ve penciled it in. I generally don’t touch whatever the tastemakers consider “experimental” and this could be filed as such, even with its 100% lack of hoodwinking qualities. Because all of my critical/creative energy is going elsewhere right now, I’ll lean on the comparison crutch (nope, still haven’t thought of the first one): Early Mercury Rev, early Genesis, Torche/Melvins, Butthole Surfers circa great, and maybe some of that stuff that the idiots call “shitgaze,” or what I may incorrectly assume they are calling “shitgaze” (Sic Alps, Pink Reason, Blank Dogs, Psychedelic Horseshit, Iran). Check it out, my runnin’ dogs!

Witch Paralyzed - Heavier and catchier than that tedium party of a debut. The next one is going to be a Gobblehoof tribute. No jokin’

Lastly, and like my eldest relatives, I have enjoyed breaking the speed limit and hassling people to the sounds of the aforenamed poopgaze bands…..primarily Blank Dogs, Times New Viking (who don’t fit into that group that shouldn’t be a group in the first place), and Psychedelic Horseshit.

…I must return to crucial concerns….

Hey, one last thing before I take off: You really should buy my album. I mean it. You should friend us on MySpace. You should spread the word.

Just Farr A Laugh Release Party at Goner Records was a success!! Started out with a little history, gave a slide show (w/commentary) representing many of the drawings and several of the photo shoots, then pulled a Radiohead on the crowd. Some of the attendees were familiar with JFAL, so I let them pick the calls to be played, and followed each with a brief back story. We listened to:

“Bleachy and the .99 Big Bufords”

“Everyone Loves a Good Bootleg Garfield the Cat”

“T-Mobile Employees F*ck Off on the Clock”

“Man With a Confusing Array of Things for Sale”

“Attitudes”

…and maybe I’m forgetting one. I’ll check the tape. Two things were particularly amazing: Eric Friedl (or “Oblivian” to some and half-owner of Goner) drove to Rally’s and purchased FORTY steaming-hot Big Bufords w/ fries, assembled the pile on a platter, and only THREE were left at the end of the event! Amazing! AND….the attendees (50 - 60 people crowded into the store) were perfectly attentive during the calls and laughed heartily at ALL of the funny spots. It was as if I was playing the CD’s for two people in my living room. Pre-recorded prank calls pulled off live!! I must add that there was a conservative amount of free beer and Capri Sun on hand. I was asked to autograph a couple of copies and a handful of promo posters. 100% of the event was caught on camera and will be transferred this week. Especially funny blocks will be edited for YouTube. Thanks to everyone at Goner Records (Eric, Zac, and John), Geoffrey Brent Shrewsbury, and all that came out!!

I based the Best Show character on the HBO Undercover documentary, Small Town Ecstasy (if anyone knows where I can obtain a copy of this…..). If you’ve witnessed this piece of work, “Ditchweed” should ring slightly familiar.

The Solomon Grundy album…..bust through a wall like a big fat Van Conner and harrass the nearest cutout bin or eBay auction. You will pay no more than two bux, but it’s worth 6x that. Take what you hate about late-period Screaming Trees (first three albums are worth seeking out, btw) and replace it with what you love about grade-A power pop. Thank god the Screaming Trees weren’t getting along in 1990. You may ask, “What is this Seattle phase, sir?” Tad documentary? Blown away. Might watch it AGAIN tonight once I finish with more important concerns. Torche, Solomon Grundy, and Tad….this week I’ve listened only to bands fronted by big boys.
